#ArtSeeksHer: Assistant Retail Manager

The Whitney Museum of American Art seeks an ambitious and experience oriented team to open its new building on May 1, 2015. The new building is designed to offer the most expansive display ever of the Whitney’s unsurpassed collection of modern and contemporary American art and is positioned to capture a large volume of visitors.

The Assistant Manager will keep the sales floor energized and the Sales Associates motivated. Under the direction of the Shop Manager, the Assistant Manager will lead the team to meet daily sales goals and develop a loyal onsite and online audience for the Whitney Museum Shop. With a constant eye on the sales floor, the manager will adjust staffing and actively monitor merchandise presentation to ensure that customers have an engaging positive experience. The manager will work with other front facing departments, such as Membership, Visitor Services and Security to “own” the customer experience in a fast paced high traffic environment.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Providing impeccable customer service and supervising daily performance of Sales Associates; efficient and accurate processing of sales transactions across technology platforms; responsibly handle cash and credit card transactions, prepare bank deposits and maintain the retail operating bank. The manager will actively ensure high standards of merchandise presentation, both visually and verbally; perform accounting reconciliation of daily sales; assist in coordinating the breakdown of the retail shop for events; perform inventory counts as scheduled; provide back office support to Shop Manager as necessary; other related duties as assigned.

Successful candidates will bring an appreciation of the shopping experience, an enthusiasm for customer service and a keen attention to detail to this key public facing role.

Requirements: Supervisory retail experience and strong public facing customer service skills; accurate cash handling skills; outgoing and professional attitude; previous POS and inventory experience; ability to lift and carry moderate weights of merchandise; interest in arts & culture. BA preferred but not required. Additional languages a plus.
